I purchased this because I thought that it would assist me in getting into the game. I'm relatively new to Pokemon since I wasn't allowed to go near it as a kid, and I was very excited about the new game, as well as this guide.Pros:* Colorful - everything is themed and bright, and it makes reading through the guide very fun.* The cover - it's smooth, shiny, and truly elegant. I went for this copy because of the lithographs, but I'm totally in love with the cover.* Table of Contents - Very detailed, but also incredibly tiny. If you have trouble reading up close, this is going to be time to get the magnifying page overlay out. I'm not kidding. It's a bit overwhelming.* Color Coded Sections - Have you ever looked at a big store magazine, or a fabric pattern book, and they have those neat color coded section tabs? Do you love them because they're so organized? WELL, YOU'RE IN LUCK. This guide does the exact same thing, making your questions and concerns quickly and easily become knowledge and power.Cons:* Lithographs - sadly the majority of these looks pixelated, or blurry, almost as if they were smaller works of art that were enlarged to be printed... for those who are likely interested in the lithographs and understand graphic art terminology, it looks like it was printed in 72 dpi, not 300 dpi.They are double sided, with one side giving dimensions and facial expressions of a specific character, and the other side of a location.Out of the eight lithographs, I'd likely only frame and display one of the location artworks, as it is the only one that seems to be printed properly.For those wondering, I checked with a friend who got the same version and her lithographs are exactly the same.TL;DR: Basically, they are wildly disappointing.* Ads - I get that adverts are necessary, but there's legitimately a paper flier for another guide (Pokedex Sun and Moon, arriving in early 2017) that totes itself as "a postgame guide." It makes me feel like my purchase was immediately useless. I'm not going to buy this Pokedex, so should I even have bothered to get this guide? Is all the information I'm going to need in this guide? (I have no idea. I will report back when I finish the game.)Should you buy?Yes and No.* YES, if you're a collector and really just need this sumptuous hardcover version in your possession. No judgement from me, it's glorious.* NO, if you're a player trying to get into the game and learn more about Pokemon. There are a lot of resources online, and I was persuaded by the temptations of lithographs and a hefty discount for ordering it before release. Sadly, I feel like this was a poor addition and that this version of the guide is simply a money grab for desperate new players that didn't pre-order the standard edition. I'm honestly considering returning the book and just trudging along on my own. I'm having more fun being vaguely confused (and equally as excited) by this take on the franchise... it's really helping me connect to my character.In essence, I feel like I've been scammed. Sure, it's pretty, but it's overpriced and it's a collector's novelty that will only look pretty on a shelf in a month or two... until I decide to donate it, or sell it back to Amazon or to a friend, in about a year. I know myself and I'm not going to lie to you, a kind stranger that has read through my entire write-up on this relatively mediocre product. Save yourself and your money.PHOTOGRAPH CHART:Photo 1: Lithograph sneak peaks. Sure, "it's not a great photo," you may be saying. Well, it's a fine photo save for the shadow from my camera. What looks blurry or hard to make out is just that. Some of the pieces are good looking, but most just make you question your life choices.Photo 2: Look at the color, look at the neat color-coded directory on the side. How convenient and nice.Photo 3: Wow, what a gorgeous shiny cover! What's this? Oh, it's an ad telling me that I need to buy EVEN MORE... before I even get to the actual guide. Even before I get to the table of contents... wow.EDIT NOTE: Please check out the comment section of this review for another take on some of my main concerns. T. Burman really knows what he's talking about, and it's worth a read if you're considering this (or any Pokemon) guidebook!
I personally find it hilarious that people were expecting this to have a full Pokédex, since the guides have been split in two since Gen IV. The Pokédex that's being released in 2017 will be the same size as this guide, because there are currently 802 Pokémon, good luck getting a guide and a dex in one book and have it still be usable. I'd rather NOT have my game guide be the size of a college textbook, thanks.This one has the game basics, some slightly advanced tactics, a full list of moves, abilities, items, and even clothes, and an abridged "where to get each Pokémon". It's also got a thorough walkthrough, with great maps and Pokémon checklists in each route.The book itself is absolutely gorgeous, my favorite one thus far. Mine came undamaged, in perfect shape. The concept artwork isn't fabulous quality, but it's definitely not bad, and it's just a bonus anyway.Yes, doesn't include the post-game or a full dex. It's just like they've done for ages. And it's exactly what I expected, because it's exactly what they've been doing for years (minus the XY guide that they kind of borked by shrinking it). The only thing I'd change is make the region map poster larger, but again it's exactly what it's always been. 10/10
I give this 5 stars because it does what it says. It's a guide for going through the game. Most Pokemon games in the past have come out with a pokedex a few months after the game with detailed locations on every Pokemon. That is not the purpose of the guide. The guide is there to help with gameplay. The pokedex that comes out later is more for after the game is beaten.
The Pokémon Company has done an excellent job with this companion guide which will benefit all users in their quest to complete their island challenges. It is hard covered and includes full colored pages and a beautiful and shiny cover that gives it an older, more rustic appearance.Useful to AllFor first time players and for veteran players, this guide book is very easy to follow. The designers included a table of contents and have created color coded sections for each island and other content. Although the book does take away from the challenge of doing the game on your own, it is still a great reference if you get stuck or need more of an explanation. Generally, the book will warn you before turning a page that if you wish to figure out a challenge on your own not to turn the page just yet.This companion has been a great reference and a good investment for the newest games. Content is explained thoroughly and it includes multiple full lists of all items, berries, moves, natures, and much more. The Pokémon Company was also very careful to explain everything that is going on in PokéPelago and the Festival Plaza which are both excellent additions. Also included is an abridged Alolan Pokédex that tells you who you can catch, at least one location you can catch it at, and when the Pokemon will level up. As it is mentioned in the product description, it is a step-by-step walk-through of all the island adventures you will get to experience. The description is true to its word and will even remind you to go back to a place or to a person to collect on experience, items, or cash after you have completed a task.MapsThe maps that are provided are very detailed for trail-goers. They include the names of important buildings and mark areas of importance. Every berry pile and item to be picked up is highlighted as well as any spot that has a Zygarde cell is marked which is very handy if you want to reach the 100%. Items that are hidden are marked with a question mark for anyone who really wants to get everything but after playing the game you will notice they are not always dead center which can give you a nice challenge to actually find them.In conclusion, this is a great product and a great investment for your playing tendencies. The companion is very informative, very colorful, and very helpful while you complete your island challenges.Alola, Trail-Goer
