PreS-Gr 3—The newest entry in this interactive series offers readers a lively introduction to the science of weather systems. Each of the first six chapters covers a different type of weather children might experience, giving simple scientific explanations for phenomena such as heat waves, wind storms, and cloud formations. The last chapter discusses the concept of climate zones. Readers of all ages will enjoy the browsability of the colorful spreads, and the choice to divide the book into chapters based on weather types (hot, cold, rainy, windy, and cloudy) is developmentally appropriate for children who may not have examined the subject before. A small number of photographs show destruction of vehicles and buildings caused by extreme circumstances, but safety tips offer information as well as reassurance to those who might find these pictures frightening. As with all books in this series, questions and games incorporated throughout all sections invite critical thinking. Parental tips and front matter will help adults use the book with prereaders, while the back matter and pronunciation tips support fluent readers looking for specific topics and material. VERDICT The cheerful page layout, easily-grasped facts, and bright photographs make this another solid entry in a perennially favorite series.—Katherine Barr, Cameron Village Regional Library, NC

We bought the Space book from this series first: National Geographic Kids First Big Book of Space (National Geographic Little Kids First Big Books) and our daughter really enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. So when she expressed an interest in weather we ordered this one. It seems good, too, if a little short on details; it seems to be a little less in depth than the Space book. But otherwise, it is attractive, well organized and engaging for our 3.5 year old.May main concern about this book is a glaring error on page 18 (photo attached). There is a photo of a polar bear on an ice sheet and the photo caption reads: "Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth." Wow. I think it's fairly common knowledge that there are no polar bears on the continent of Antarctica. So I'm a little concerned about buying any more books in this series. If the publisher can allow an error like this through, what else might be wrong?
I bought this book for my four year old daughter who had learned about clouds and other types of weather in preschool. We thoroughly enjoyed reading it and she is so interested in weather now. We constantly talk about things learned in the book. She has developed a real interest in science and this book was just perfect for explaining big concepts to a little person!
We love this book! It was a gift for our 4.5 year old, who has quite an interest in weather, seasons, and storms. The book has beautiful pictures with vibrant colors, lots of great information, and some sections with interactive questions. He understands a lot of the basic concepts, and is retaining a crazy amount of the details that go along with each topic. (Even mom and dad are learning a few new things.)There’s enough information that I feel he’ll stay interested in this book, and will continue asking questions and learning as he gets older. It’s still a favorite after a couple months, and one of the few books that he’ll sit with for more than 5 minutes (same holds true for the NG Big Book of Space).Additionally, I think the explanation for storms that we experience in our area, has helped to calm his active mind and ease his typical kiddo fears a little. Pretty cool feature for a kid’s book!
For any child interested in the weather in general or natural disasters in particular, this book is sure to please. The writing is easy to understand and interesting and it is chock full of bright pictures as reinforcement and explanation. My 7 year old grandson loved the weather before this book's arrival. Now he cannot wait to become a meteorologist!
My 5 year old daughter, who aspires to become a meteorologist, loves this book. The pictures are neat, and it's written in a simple yet interesting way. Would definitely recommend!
My 4 year old is reading and I wanted to find him nonfiction text. These National Geographic books are perfect for his reading level! The pictures are informative and engaging and the text itself is well written and easy to follow. I have purchased at least 10 of these books and my son loves them. The book itself is super sturdy too. Love that the font is large.
This is the fourth "First Big..." book I've given my 5 year old grandson. We love reading them together and looking at all the beautiful pictures. Both of us have learned a lot!!
very informative book. Simple enough for 5 and 7 year old to understand.
