This is an interesting monograph/memoir that presents some of the outstanding women who served with the OSS during World War II. The women are featured in personality vignettes that detail their particular exploits, and the last one is McIntosh's personal experience. The author interviewed many of the individuals she presented, and updated their subsequent lives. It was an interesting read but not exactly what I was looking for, since I was researching a slightly different topic. However, for folks interested in that era and the role of women who made things happen, it's a good introduction. Someone who is interested in a more in-depth research piece might begin with this book, which might point the way to other sources. I would have appreciated footnotes and a bibliography, but I was reading from the perspective of a historian.
One of the "spies" in the book was my adoptive mother, Joan Bondurant, so I was most interested to read about her work in the OSS and that of her women colleagues. A very informative look at the bravery and resourcefulness of these dedicated women who occupy a largely unknown niche in the history of this country's involvement in WW II. I highly recommend it.
I have seen some of the negative reviews. They are entitled to their opinion. I first want to say that the date of writing of this title is 1998. That said, I believe the author recently celebrated her 100th birthday at the CIA. I look at the book as a jig-saw puzzle piece to the larger history of both military and intelligence operations of WWII (and beyond). It is non-fiction so is not intended for entertainment. I just appreciate that the author got around to saving information from the period in her 80s.
This book tells great stories of women who believed in their cause, and did something about it.If you like James Bond movies, you should like this read. These women did whatever was required to accomplish their missions. Exciting stories that are well written. READ IT!
The book is a very detailed account of the women of the WW II OSS and their contribution to the war effort. In addition it gives some detail of the men they worked with and for. A woman "file clerk" was a lot more then that and most women in the OSS (and men) were college educated and spoke several languages. Their attention to detail was amazing and complete. A book well worth reading if you are interested in WWII or the spy business.
Wish I could have been as brave & daring. I think I've had a very active life, but she sure beat me.
Interesting history for a part of WW2 that's not well known. If you're looking for thrilling tales of death-defying adventure behind enemy lines, there are a couple of interesting episodes, but mostly this is just about young ladies making the best of very odd jobs in uncomfortable but sometimes exotic locations.
My mother was a Signal Corps Officer (Cryptography) in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) from 1942-1954, so I found this book to be a fascinating insight into the world that she worked in. Thank you for telling the story of these amazing women from The Greatest Generation!
