How can I balance the value of this book as an instruction manual, with the really bad print quality from the RAA reprint? Unfortunately, I think they're inexorably tied together. The color images are faded...very low saturation...and the BW images are just dark. If I were Rockport, I would demand a reprint on these books, not try to sell them to unsuspecting buyers. I also have Gruppe's "Brushwork for the Oil Painter" which has excellent color and BW images, so I know how the book was intended to be printed and viewed. I'll continue to look for an original edition so I can enjoy the images along with the text. I just can't recommend spending $40 on this reprint.
This book is a reissue of one of Gruppe's classics. Like the original, the beauty is in the words not the pictures. Almost all which are black and white. There are about 20 color plates which only make you wish there was more. The book is laid out into the following 7 Chapters:Materials and EquipmentDrawing and ValuesColorDesign and CompositionLay-in and DevelopmentHarbor ScenesLandscapesI really enjoyed the Harbor Scene chapter as it contains a wealth of information about how to make sense of a busy harbor into its logical parts including techniques for many harbor objects such as; workmen, pilings, rigging, gulls and water.
A great reference book, especially for wet into wet (or alla prima) painting, and should be in every plein air painter's library--and used! It shows the beginner how little equipment is needed for painting on location, and gives advanced painting techniques and advice for more accomplished painters. Gruppe was a master oil painter and instructor, and he is articulate in this book, where he is able to help the student feel the subjects or landscape he or she is painting..
I would not have bought this book if I had seen it and been able to look at it first. The reprints in black and white are so dark it is difficult to view them.
This book looks like it was copied on a cheap b&w copier. Images are blurry and many are out of focus. While the information is good the overall quality is poor. I am embarrassed to loan this book to fellow artists.
Emile Gruppe is one of the best Pleine Aire painters. This is one of several books on the subject and all of them are worthy of owning. I bought this as a gift, she was excited to receive it. You will be too!
Lots of great info for OIL painters as well as helpful design principles that apply to art in general. I was happy with my purchase.
Emil Gruppe has succeeded an presenting so many great and unique ideas and concepts in this book. His ideas on composition and value are especially useful. I greatly enjoy using his simplified palette of colors together with the concept of reds being a modifier of color rather than being a warm color. I strongly recommend this book.
