About the Author

John W. Creswell, PhD, is a professor of family medicine and co-director of the Michigan Mixed Methods Research and Scholarship Program at the University of Michigan. He has authored numerous articles and 28 books on mixed methods research, qualitative research, and research design. While at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he held the Clifton Endowed Professor Chair, served as director of a mixed methods research office, founded SAGE’s Journal of Mixed Methods Research, and was an adjunct professor of family medicine at the University of Michigan and a consultant to the Veterans Administration health services research center. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar to South Africa in 2008 and to Thailand in 2012. In 2011, he co-led a national working group on mixed methods practices at the National Institutes of Health, served as a visiting professor at Harvard’s School of Public Health, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. In 2014, he was the president of the Mixed Methods International Research Association. In 2015, he joined the staff of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan. John has been teaching research methods courses for the past 40 years..Â

Although Creswell is a generalist when it comes to writing about research, he is a damn good one. In this book, he provides a great overview of qualitative research. Each of the five qualitative research designs (i.e., case study, phenomenology, narrative, ethnography, grounded theory) has its own experts, and Creswell draws on all of them in constructing the book. This book is great for a qualitative research course in graduate school. It should not be used as a resource in a dissertation.

This book provides an excellent overview of the qualitative research methods. I especially love all of the tables for each chapter that compare each method. Creswell does a wonderful job of succinctly presenting each method in a logical format. I have learned so much from this book and I'm happy I got it.

I am extremely disappointed by the fact that my copy of this book has typos, enough to make it annoy me while I'm reading. There are at least a few PER PAGE. I did not pay to have a textbook for a graduate school class that has typos in it!

Unfortunately, the copy I received is a counterfeit. Many errors, bad binding, badly printed, pages out of order. I do not expect a refund, however when I contacted the seller with this information I at least expect expected an acknowledgment. Disappointing.

My copy has so many grammatical errors it's almost unbearable to read. It would be a great resource if I wasn't so distracted. Be sure to purchase hardback in this book because those do not have errors.

I cannot see how anyone in qualitative research will survive without his or her own copy of Creswell. He introduces and explains qualitative research quite well. One draw back is that he refers everything back to one of 5 methods of qualitative research. There are many other methods available so one conducting a design outside of his five methods will require another source. However, this is a necessary foundational resource.

This text is a must have for all those venturing into the world of qualitative research. Mr. Creswell's writing style is very easy to read, somewhat conversational, but the knowledge being shared is immeasurable. This is definitely on of my go-to texts for guidance on qualitative research.

Before I read this book I was struggling with structuring the research methodology part of my dissertation for a post graduate degree. I found the book exceptionally well written in a clear and flowing manner unlike many books on this subject.
