I first became aware of William Stout via a series of interviews in a magazine called COMICS INTERVIEW. The black and white art samples accompanying the interview impressed me, and his responses and stories really resonated. He was into the stuff I loved. I started finding his work and started getting as much as I could. He’s a fantastic artist. It boggles the mind how much he has accomplished in his career, and this book tried to show you a lot of it. Stout could easily fill 10 of these books with his works. He’s lived a full life and he shares it in his art. This book offers a great glimpse into his varied career, and it’s refreshing to get lost in its pages for hours. The book is huge, and well designed... the paper stock and reproduction are top notch. The artwork is fantastic and sublime all the way through. This is a book that belongs in every public library and every science fiction/fantasy/dinosaur fan’s home. It comes with my highest possible recommendation.
William Stout is an institution that not enough people know about. His career started in limited distribution fanzines and has led to career high points like the San Diego Museum of Natural History's prehistoric life murals. Those who know him swear by his work and from science to fantasy he's illustrated it all. From kids books underground comics he's literally never met the project he couldn't love for it's own sake. That love shows in every pen and brush stroke.Add to all that his love for meeting people from every walk of life. William's been more than just an artist. He's also a teacher and a direct or indirect inspiration for artists all over the world.He's so nice and talented that he sometimes seems unreal. The balance he maintains in his life from art to friendships is admirable and beyond impressive.This collection goes a long way to showing what a passionate life can deliver for those willing to work hard, have and open heart and an open mind.This book showcases a remarkable amount of art. Insight publishing has put together a beautiful book and I cannot recommend it enough, and Amazon's price is insanely budget friendly.I can't help but recommend this book to anyone wanting to have an incredible art book and to see how a master applies his craft and imagination to a lifelong passion. He does so across such a vast array of projects and mediums it's hard to list them all.Just get the book.
Beautiful collection of Stout’s work across genres. I think this is a “must have†for any SF&F art fan (or even those who appreciate a good paleontology assortment of images — Stout’s dinosaurs are dated but still amazingly well-done based on current research). Nicely reproduced and bound. Recommended!
A comprehensive collection, and so much art!!! Paper quality is A+., a MUST HAVE for lovers of the genre and art in general. There were also several pull out pages that were incredible. Highly recommend!
Finally! A very comprehensive book on the life and artistic talent of William Stout. Hundreds of color and black and white illustrations throughout the book (331 pages). Highly recommended!!
