This book is not intended to be a complete compendium of every edible landscaping plant, but instead focuses on a small variety that the author thinks are particularly noteworthy. Many of them are lovely three or four seasons of the year, provide tasty fruit, and are relatively easy to care for. Reading through it, i discovered a great many plants i'd never heard of that sound quite delicious.However, the author is relatively unconcerned about invasive species. He even lists blackberries as something to put in your garden, with an offhand mention of pruning to control growth. (Here in the pacific northwest, we don't worry about a zombie apocalypse much, because the blackberry bushes are stronger, faster, meaner, and more virulent than any zombie plague.) At least a few other plants also spread via suckers and underground runners, sometimes quite determinedly, but almost no emphasis is placed on it. A gardener following the recommendations in this book may end up with a property totally overrun by blackberries and maypop because they weren't able to keep up with the plants' precocious growing habits.My advice to anyone looking to create their own edible landscape is to use this book as a starting point. Get some ideas of which plants sound like you'd like having them around, but then go check other sources. Make sure the plants you want to grow won't run you out of your home in a few seasons, or aren't disease-prone in your area. (For example, i was planning on planting some Juneberry trees until i talked to the people at my local garden center. They told me that i'd spend so much time fighting disease on my Juneberries that even if i managed a harvest, it wouldn't be worth it.)--If you've got your heart set on growing some of the more obscure fruit listed in this book, but can't find reliable information, consider getting another book by the same author: Uncommon Fruits for Every Garden. It has a much smaller selection of fruits, but much more detailed information about each of them.
Great book to get you interested in using fruit as part of an edible landscape. If you are already growing vegetables at home and want to invest in fruiting shrubs, vines, trees or groundcovers, this is a good resource. This is the book that got me interested in using fruit in the landscape, and there are a lot of plants he describes that I had never considered. I've since planted blueberry, blackberry, strawberry, and serviceberry, and hope to add some hardy kiwi in the future. He using a rating system that is subjective, but seems to work well. It is helpful in deciding between plants if you have limited space.
With the rising cost of food, most especially fruits, and having trouble finding organics I will be planting an edible paradise on my property. This book is one of the best I've read on fruit. While not every type of fruit is covered I was introduced to a few varieties I had not heard of before. Where this book is ahead of the others is that it is easy to read, has everything broken down by not only climate but how much you can expect to harvest and the pros and cons of each variety for each plant. Space requirements, how to train or prune and when and how to harvest are all there in nice big print.
What a wonderful book to read! He not only covers the basics of how to integrate fruits into the landscape, but also has a specific information about each plant. He list two different heat/cold zone maps and his own index about how difficult a given plant is to grow. I have read two of his other books and was worried that this would just be a remix of them, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was written and the new information he gives. It is a joy to read and a bargain for the years of trial and error he will save us all as we plant fruit trees.
This might not be fair but I was really interested in blackberries and raspberries naturalized in the landscape. Blackberries are covered, barely adequately. But, raspberries are not even mentioned except for a description below one photo of a black raspberry. No discussion of the suitability of raspberries at all, or lack thereof. Unfortunately, that was the info I was searching for and didn't find. Other than that, it is a nicely done volume. The coverage of other fruits is adequate but I would say the book concentrates more on the general landscape plan and the place of fruits and berries within it.
How to integrate food plants into a decorative landscape plan. I love the goal and am not there yet. This is practical except for the fact I think a great deal of fruit needs to be sprayed. Am working on alternatives.
This book has many terrific ideas on how to integrate fruit trees, shrubs, etc into one's landscape. It's a trasure-trove of useful information that I've found to be extremely useful in planning the layout of our land. Kudos to Lee Reich for pulling this all together in one book!
