About the Author
Adrienne von Speyr (1902-1967) was a Swiss medical doctor, convert to Catholicism, a mystic, wife and author of over 60 books on spirituality and theology. She collaborated closely with the renowned theologian Hans Urs Von Balthasar, her confessor for 27 years, and they co-founded the Community of Saint John. Her numerous writings, published by Ignatius Press, are recognized by leading theologians and writers as a major contribution to the mystical and spiritual writings of the Church. Among her most important works are Book of All Saints, Confession, The World of Prayer, Handmaid of the Lord, and The Passion from Within.

There is more HUvB here than Adrienne, but it's a good summary of the theological debates which were going on late in the last century. Makes you glad you did not become a theologian. They held the line of rationality against the modernists and reducionists.
Although I have not yet completed this book, the chapters that I have read were excellent, deep and spiritually thought provoking.
Adrienne is a Catholic mystic whose writing is deeply imbued with the Spirit of Truth and Wisdom which does not come from man but is clearly a gift of love for us all.
Wonderful book - very deep. I'm not very far into it; this book does not lend itself to a quick reading, although it is very well written. It is wonderful to read a page or a paragraph and then ponder and pray it through. This is not an over-the-top devotional style book, but rather a deep study of Mary's character and formation. I highly recommend this book!
Though profoundly Catholic, this is a beautiful theological approach to motherhood, with all it's joys, hardships, disappointments, demands, and irreplaceable adventure, Mary was not soared of any of these, but her love and surrender made the impossible possible. The book is not only a hymn to motherhood but to femininity.
