Full disclosure, I was interviewed for the book and I am quoted in it. That said, I found it to be an enjoyable read with lots of great images and found it pulling up memory after memory of the years I spent almost living at First Ave. For those who know the club, you will very much enjoy the book, for those who are curious about this thing called First Ave. well this will provide you with a broad perspective of it's history and how it made history. Sure it is known for Prince and my quote is about him, but Prince only performed there a handful of times. What the book does a good job of is providing a sense of how remarkable this club was during the '80s. It was the leader that set the mark that other clubs around the country and world would imitate.It was also a very different time during the 80s, the club booked the widest variety of acts imaginable and it used the 7th St entry to provide a place for local bands to hone their acts.A worthy addition to any music lovers book shelf.
Bought it as a birthday gift for a friend, ended up buying a copy for myself. Love it! It was great to hear the story of the person behind the printed monthly schedules that I remember picking up at all the cool record stores back in the day: Northern Lights, Wax Museum et al.
Beautifully done. Almost like a home movie for me - I started going to Uncle Sam's teen disco night in the late 70's and still catch shows there when I can. There is plenty for music fans/musicians everywhere to love here, regardless of where you call home. If you've ever played First Ave, or ever loved a venue, this book is for you.
loved it. well written history of first avenue, with lots of great photographs. there are a couple of chapters devoted to prince but also so much more.
My wife and I bought “First Avenue†for our son, who now lives on east coast, for his birthday. He and his friends enjoyed the book and their memories of First Avenue. Great book for anyone with First Avenue connections,
